Idea #2: Plings randomiser (I feel lucky!)

bug This idea is awaiting moderator approval before going to the popular ideas area.

Rationale
A long list of possible activities within any given time period and/or location is fine.

But if you dont really know what you are looking for then some way to randomly generate an activity would be useful

Initially, working on a solution to do this function would be the first step - moving onto how it can look/feel is another

Solution #1: Pot luck
Written by stevieflow the 16 Jun 09 at 16:43.
A random button that inherits an area/place and picks out an activity for display

There would then need to be a function for someone to in turn rate this activity:

- I'd go
- Not sure / maybe
- Nah

Solution #2: Tag Cloud

Isn't a tag cloud a better way to quickly and easily see what is on in a given area over a given time period?

Where would see this implemented? Is it a stand alone app, a wordpress widget, etc?

Picking a random activity from an XML stream is pretty easy to do - maybe a placeto start is to write a php class that does that for a plings formatted xml file and for a plings array parsed in php5 or with clsParseXML.

Is rating an integral part of this 'randomiser'? What you do with the ratings?

The important thing about this is that it's not about seeing what provision is available - it's about motivating people to participate in activities.

The odd-ball suggestion might just be the one for you.

When discussed before we've thought about this a 'fruit machine' style interface.

I would see this as widget which could be included as part of LA campaigns to encourage activity uptake.

Take a look at this from One North East

http://www.visitnortheastengland.com/site/inspire-me/adventure-generator

I think the key for Plings would be to have quality images and copy alongside any activity data

Re: One North East

Ooooh - I hate it.

I quite liked seeing all the pictures go by at first and saw something I wanted to click on, but had to then go and 'Generate an adventure' and so it throws random things at you, but could I get the one I'd originally seen? Could I go back when I'd accidentally clicked roll again? Uuugh! nasty!

Looks cool, does cool stuff, but isn't actually useful for me - how many odd balls do I need to wade through before I get to something I want?

I did like the scrolling pictures - and they would have benefited by having quality copy.

I can sort of see the concept here - and maybe it's all about personal preferences - it's not something I'd promote over other ideas, but could be a project others would want to take up.
