Idea #14: Plings by Text Message

bug This idea is awaiting moderator approval before going to the popular ideas area.
Written by David C the 4 Sep 09 at 11:28. Category: Publishing Plings Data. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: Awaiting moderation
Rationale
We had a suggestion:

"Text me the details of this activity.

Allow the details of any activity to be sent by SMS to the users phone. would need a way to confirm it was the users phone, but then could be quite useful?"

Presumably this has been suggested in relation to seeing the data in some format already - e.g. on a website

This would have to be a *free* service to users, but we would have to have something in place to ensure that it was authenticated I'd suggest.

I don't see that there is anyway to avoid cost with an sms service. It either needs to be picked up by the send of the text or the receiver.

Strikes me as the receiver of the text should pay for it. What happens if you text to find out details of the next bus?

I think most of the next bus services charge the receiver. We are going to be using intellisms.co.uk is Blackpool to do our SMS service. This allows for outgoing SMS which we buy pre-paid credits for, this way you can limit the amount being spent on this however it does mean that if the credits run out people can't get the info. On the plus side they do offer a "let me know when we are running out of credits" feature.

In youth engagement this would have to be sender pays. Asking young people to pay is not likely to be popular.

With a 'Forward this to me via SMS' option deciding whether verification is needed or not is a tricky one. It may be worth checking if there is industry guidance on this...

One possibility would be creating a more general purpose widget for Local Authorities any others to use to offer a 'Text this information to me' service, which might be able to more easily secure opt-in from young people generally, and to build up a stock of pre-authenticated numbers.

Shouldn't this be something that the individual applications offer, not something core to the database?
