Idea #12: What's New

Written by timd the 6 Aug 09 at 14:46. Category: Publishing Plings Data. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
A feed or easy API call to fetch only recently changed records or information.

It would be great to be able to send information providers, youth workers, parents & young people a list of 'new' activities this week. This would be a feed which excluded (in some way) recurrence of activities from previous weeks - but highlighted substantially changed or new activities.

Solution #1: Filtered feeds

Some code which filters feeds to provide this 'new activity' functionality.

Nice idea timd.

Could you expand a little on what you mean by "substantially changed or new activities"?

With instance based data (e.g.) swimming on Tuesday at 6pm this week, may look much the same (to a computer!) next week - would that be included?

Would we be looking at updates/cancellations that kind of thing, so only sending data if it has been altered since last they checked?

We have the 'Plings Selecta' idea going on right now (see http://ideas.plings.info/ideatorrent/idea/1/) - as a way of letting people filter the data to get only the stuff that they want - maybe this is similar to that..

If we assume a worker who is aware of all the activities that go on in their area - then I was seeing that this would be the essential update to their knowledge - so would include:

> The fact that a one-off, or new series of activities is starting/taking place;
> Updates and cancellations;

And possibly also:

> A note that a series of activities has ended;

Where activity providers are supplying additional information about instances, it may contain this.

If we assume a young person who checks the activities website regularly, in might provide the 'What's New' information - telling them about new activities - which would be one-off activities, and new series of instances.
